What is apostille and legalization?

Apostille and legalization are two essential processes in the international recognition of official documents issued in one country and used in another. These procedures are necessary when you want to use documents in a foreign country, whether for personal, academic, or commercial purposes.

An apostille is a stamp or certificate issued by the competent authorities of a signatory state to the Hague Convention for official documents to be presented in another signatory state. Essentially, apostille confirms the authenticity of the signature and the capacity in which the person or organization who issued the document acted.

The purpose of issuing an apostille is to authenticate the origin of an official act to prevent the use of false documents for legal purposes.

Our team can represent you in obtaining apostilles from all competent institutions in Romania: Prefecture, Tribunal, and Chamber of Notaries Public.

Super-legalization, on the other hand, is the procedure performed by the competent authorities in Romania to certify, for countries that are not parties to the Hague Convention or with which Romania does not have bilateral agreements for the mutual recognition of documents, that the document subject to this procedure is an official act, the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the signatory of the document acted, and the identity of the seal or stamp on the document.

Our team can represent you in obtaining legalization from all competent institutions in Romania: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chamber of Notaries Public, Diplomatic Missions/Consular Offices.

Which documents can be apostilled and legalized?

In practice, most official documents can be apostilled or legalized, depending on the legal requirements of the country in which you intend to use them. Here are some common examples of documents that can be apostilled or legalized:
